Around 125 Sigma 38's were built between 1988 and 1996. The concept behind the boats design by David Thomas was the creation of a fast safe yacht equally at home family cruising, or racing with a full crew of 9. The accommodation is extraordinary for a yacht of this size, with sleeping for up to 10 in 4 cabins. The Sigma 38 is well supported by a very active and knowledgeable Class Association and the Association is well supported by owners. The Class Association helps with the supply of key bespoke spares for these yachts and has contacts with a number of important suppliers to ensure that the boats can be properly maintained whether racing or cruising.
The UK racing fleet is very strong, with excellent turnouts for Cowes Week, National Championships and the perrennial RORC and JOG offshore series. Cruising a Sigma 38 is very rewarding too, as they eat up the miles with ease. Several round the world trips have been undertaken and the world fleet is represented across the globe, with boats in the US, the EU, Australia and the Far East. The focus though is in the UK where the one design turnouts are the envy of many newer classes seeking to establish themselves.
