Racing

  1. Where can I race a Sigma 38?

There is a large fleet of 38's in the Solent area which has become the primary focus for racing in the last few years.  Cowes Week, the Warsash Spring Series and the Hamble Winter Series all have one design starts and typically 13 or more boats take part in each series.

  2. Do I have to have an experienced crew?

The Sigma 38 lends itself well to teams of all kinds. A well drilled crew with lots of experience on the boat will have a distinct advantage but the ethos of the racing fleet is one of friendly rivalry within the Sigma 38 community. Everyone is welcome from beginners to Olympic hopefuls!

  1. Can a couple sail a Sigma 38 easily

Yes. In fact many owners race 2 handed. The boat can be handled safely and easily by a couple with very few alterations to the standard set up. The running backstays featured in the rig set up are tuning aides rather than rig stays, and the lines for reefing can and often are led aft to minimise the need to leave the cockpit. Roller reefing may be fitted, but the boats are well suited to sailing with smaller headsails.
